Tarte Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder

  • Product: Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder
  • Vendor: Ulta or
  • Initial Review: 4/15/2015
  • Price: 33.00 USD
  • Reason for Purchase: I asked the sales associate at my local Ulta store that I wanted a finishing powder that would absorb oil. She asked me my price range and I told her around $30. I was directed towards another associate who guided me towards “Tarte“. I had never used the brand, but she told me that this product was the powder of all powders for oily skin.
  • Application: All you have to do is press down on the top of the container and the powder comes out of the tiny hole they put there. If you actually have a life you don’t do this, just take a large brush, flip the container upside-down and shake it on it. Then apply. Very simple.
Talc Finishing Powder

Since I was told that this powder would help me with my oily skin problem, I decided to give it a go. I checked out the ingredients to see what was in the powder that would deliver these results.

Tarte’s website asserted that 90% of women saw improvements in their skin texture immediately.

After 1 week, 90% of women are supposed to see a normalization in their skin’s oil production and the length of wear for their make-up.

SilicaMy favorite ingredient. This is a mineral that is also found in Naturopathica’s Vitamin K Eye Brightening Serum. I love this mineral because it reflects light from the face so that lines and wrinkles do not appear as brazenly in the sunlight.  It is also a natural absorbant, which can account for its oil fighting properties.

TalcAn absorbant mineral that is used to absorb oil, water and sebum. It can also be known as talcum powder.

PolymethylsilsesquioxaneThis is a silicone ingredient that is used in skin, hair and cosmetic formulas to promote a lubricating, smooth and silky feel to the body. It is a resin that is comprised of small particles and does not cake together so that wherever it is spread it is thin, even and shiny. Learn more about polymethylsilsesquioxane.

DimethiconeA silicone compound that makes surfaces shiny and heat-resistant.

Kaolinenhances glossiness of cosmetics.

Day 1

Oil Absorbant: I saw an immediate result with the smoothness of my skin. The powder acted as a quick oil absorbant. I was skeptical because I am used to powders absorbing oil at first but then the oil would soon overpower it. However, throughout the day my skin was smooth and the only part of my face to oil up more than usual was my nose.

Complexion: My skin was nice and smooth and there was a tinge of white but not enough to annoy me. I just brushed off excess and then went on my way. I noticed that my face reflected a bit more than usual and I realized the silica was working very well in the sunlight.

Feel: My face felt very nice and I love the softness of this product.

Day 15

Oil Normalization: The oil on my face is just like it was before but now I feel I have better control over it. It takes much longer for the oil to give me problems and the powder has allowed me to be smooth longer. My skin is always soft during the day when I where it even when the oil has finally overpowered it by the end.

Make-up: I tend to wear this powder without make-up because that’s how well it absorbs. I am not using an oil-absorbing foundation as of yet, but the powder does a wonderful job of keeping the make-up in place and making sure that if there are any discolorations they are kept reflected away.

Complexion and Acne: My acne does not flair as much with this powder because of the shiny, water-repellent nature of it. So it doesn’t hang out in my pores and widen them or cause acne. I feel very confident using this powder not only to look good on the surface, but also because it does not affect under the layers of my skin either.

This product is excellent for oily-skinned people. It is able to lay smoothly on the skin and at as a barrier and absorbant. It may not last forever, but just apply when oil is surfacing and it absorbs it all over again. It is also good if you put on a serum and it seems too oily. I was also putting a new maybelline shine blush over it on my cheeks and it did not cake or look fake, the two blended together smoothly. Love it product and would recommend!
