PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Volumizing & Clarifying Shampoo

According to PHILIP B, the Avocado Volumizing & Clarifying Shampoo is an “award-winning shampoo” that “gently deep-cleans to leave their hair full, bouncy, and gleaming”.  So my hair better have all of these things by the end of 2 weeks. 😉

Expectations

According to the PHILIP B site, the Avocado Volumizing & Clarifying Shampoo is described thus:

“One of our most acclaimed products, this shampoo refreshes your scalp and deep-cleans your hair to keep it bouncy and gleaming.

  • A generous dose of pure, crisp peppermint oil (2.3%) and 16 plant extracts create a tingly-cooling sensation, invigorating your scalp and your senses.
  • Adds lift at the roots. Rich lather clears away scalp oils and styling product residue to get your hair and scalp super-clean without stripping.
  • Stimulates circulation; leaves even troubled scalps refreshed.
  • Safe for color-treated hair; ideal for use with our Rejuvenating Oil.
  • Paraben free; keratin-treatment safe”

I have done some research when it came to peppermint oil. Come to find that it is a stimulant that can promote blood flow and help refresh the mind. I have found personally (I keep peppermint oil in my bathroom) that peppermint oil is very stimulating and refreshing everywhere. Use it with rosemary in your soap or DIY some makeup products with either peppermint and tea tree or peppermint and rosemary. So, I accept that I will get a healthy, cooling sensation on my scalp, as well as all the benefits avocado has to offer as well.

Ingredients

Here are the primary active ingredients in PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Volumizing & Clarifying Shampoo.

Because this list is so long, I have created a separate page for the list. See the Full List of Ingredients to learn about everything in PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Volumizing & Clarifying Shampoo. In the list, I linked each ingredient to the respective word on my Ingredient Vocab List. Click on those links to learn more about each ingredient.

Here are the 2 main ingredients that have the most effect on the PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo:

Menthol – the backbone of the PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo (guess Avocado too, but I like menthol better). Menthol is a wonderful substance created by God to help human beings all over the planet. It has a number of benefits, including:

  • Antipruritic – helps stops itching
  • Analgesic – alleviates muscles soreness and cramping
  • Anti-inflammation – reduces inflammation and irritation
  • Decongestant – clears out sinuses
  • Salve – reduces skin burns and damage to the skin
  • Anti-smasmodic – soothes cramped muscles
  • Perfumery – acts as a therapeutic oil
  • First-Aid – “mineral ice” to treat wounds

Avocado – Avocado oil is rich in oleic acid, which makes it a great emollient. It is also a natural source of vitamin E, which is a skin healer. This also strengthens your skin against the elements. This is a great carrier oil and can be used in aromatherapy.

“It’s an avocado…thanks…”

Based on the two main ingredients, I expect that the PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo will at least soothe my scalp (similarly to a vapor rub) and also provide a stimulating effect that will force my hair to prickle and thus seem more “volumized”. Avocado oil is a great healer and has been known to provide Vitamin E benefits to the skin. I love when I can add Vitamin E to my hair, but even more to my scalp. When Vitamin E is in hair care products, it makes it easier to heal your scalp. Vitamin E oil is harder to get directly on your scalp (it is very thick). I appreciate that they put the two together.

But as I said, I expect that my hair will probably be “stimulated” due to the prickly effects that menthol has on skin. It can create “goosebumps” which in turn makes your hair stand on end. When my hair is on end, it seems higher, so therefore, fuller. We will see how well this menthol cure works on my hair.

Results

My results were actually very decent. I wasn’t expecting positive results because I have kind of lost hope for this long hair (it is very weighed down). I was genuinely surprised by how well the PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo works on my scalp.

During Wash

When I am washing my hair, my scalp is very tingly. I love this feeling the most as it provides that instant cooling effect. I feel cleaner, brighter, and happier using the PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo. I can smell the menthol and the shampoo is very easy to put through my hair. The lather is very gentle, but strong. The PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo clearly washes out any oils I have put in my hair (as I have been experimenting with oil cleansing). This is very helpful for those of us who have thick hair or hair that usually has a lot of thicker oils (like castor) in it.

After Wash (Wet)

My hair feels very good after I have washed out the PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo. I don’t feel sticky or gross, and I can feel my goosebumps standing my hair on end. The effects are immediate as I feel the hairs on the top of my head standing up (even when wet). The PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo doesn’t bother my scalp or cause any burning/allergic reaction. I can feel the cooling effect for about an hour after I wash, and it is a very pleasant feeling. My hair is clearly clean and I don’t feel any stiffness or waxiness.

After Wash (Dry)

My hair is usually very curly, but that is due in part to the Moroccanoil Conditioner I use. The top of my head (where I don’t put much conditioner) is a little dryer most days. But it is not brittle or crinkly. The strands are soft, but they are not heavy with moisture. So the menthol and avocado do a good job of healing my hair, but moisturizing isn’t the strong suit. I have to use the Moroccanoil Conditioner to get the moisture I need as it does not come from the PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo. On another side note, I do not experience any dandruff, which was becoming a problem we were heading further into winter. My scalp had a scabbing issue on my right side, but that is gone now after about 2 weeks of use. So the healing properties seem to work.

After Wash (second day)

I usually wait 2 – 3 days between hair washes as that is the best pattern for your hair. My hair is usually very oily on day 2 (especially if I sleep with it down). If I do not sleep with it down, the top of my head is usually fine, and the hair is soft and glossy. The rest of my hair, however, is a bit more dry. I have lately been using Jojoba oil in my hair to moisturize the ends. In general, if I leave it to my PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo and my Moroccanoil Conditioner, my hair is very dry by day 2. That can also be a winter thing, but it is something that I bring up because if you are looking for a moisturizing shampoo, I don’t think PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo is going to do it for you. It definitely keeps my hair on end, but at the expense of glossiness. The hair will get dryer and duller because that is just how my hair is if I do not add oils or creams.

In regards to the promise PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo made for volumizing my hair, it passed and my hair seems far fuller than it usually does.

Conclusion

Overall, I appreciate the PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo. The product deserved to be in the 20 Best Hair Shampoos for 2017. Usually companies tend to create products that are very drying and zap moisture so that the hair stands up on itself and creates the volumizing illusion. However, this obviously makes for duller hair and you have to layer on extra products to get that oil back–only to weigh down your hair and cause it to flatten. PHILIP B new the truth: menthol is a topical stimulant that causes hair to stand on end, and therefore create the volumized illusion without sacrificing moisture. I will definitely consider using this product again if I need more volume. I know I will move on to a shampoo that creates glossiness as my next experiment, but PHILIP B Peppermint & Avocado Shampoo will always have a place in my bathroom.
